Rate Alert and Notification Guide
Watching a rate all day is not a good use of anyone's time. An alert does the watching and tells you when something actually changes.
1. How alerts work
You pick a currency and a threshold. When the rate reaches it, the app sends a notification. That is the whole mechanism — no prediction is involved, and you should be wary of any app that claims to forecast rates.
2. Setting a sensible threshold
| Currency type | Currencies | Suggested threshold | Expect |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dollar-pegged | SAR, AED, QAR, OMR, BHD | Alerts add little value | Rarely fires — the peg holds it steady |
| Basket-managed | KWD, SGD | About 0.5% from current | Occasional |
| Floating | GBP, EUR, USD, CAD, AUD, MYR | 0.5% to 1% from current | Genuinely useful |
Being straightforward: if you work in Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Oman, Bahrain or the UAE, rate alerts will not help much. Those currencies are pegged to the US dollar and barely move. Your attention is better spent comparing transfer fees, which vary far more than the rate does.
3. What an alert is worth
On a transfer of USD 3,000, a one percent better rate is roughly BDT 3,700. Worth catching if you are in a floating-currency country and the transfer is not urgent. Not worth delaying money your family needs this week.
4. Turning notifications on
- Allow notifications when the app asks, or enable them in your phone's app settings.
- Choose the currency you earn in.
- Set a threshold using the guidance above.
- Check that battery-saver or data-saver settings are not blocking background updates.
5. If alerts are not arriving
- Notification permission may be off in system settings.
- Battery optimisation may be restricting the app in the background.
- The threshold may simply be far from the current rate.
- For a pegged currency, silence is expected behaviour rather than a fault.
6. A caution
An alert tells you a rate was reached; it is not advice to transact. Rates move after a notification is sent, and the rate you finally receive is the one your bank applies at the moment of transfer.
